Community Projects Sponsored by Funds Raised Through Empty Bowls

Eat Smart (North Burnaby Boys' & Girls' Club)
Weekly cooking and daily snack program for children and youth. Cooking programs provide opportunities to try foods from different cultures.

Healthy Choices ( Cameray Child & Family Services)Youth, ages 11 to 14, learn how to make healthy choices by becoming more physically active, preparing nutritious meals and snack for themselves, eating healthy food with others their age, and learning a recipe to prepare at home.

Healthy Snacks Taste Good! (Lochdale Community School)Once a month an instructor teaches 15 to 20 parents about healthy foods in the four food groups and how to make healthy snacks for their children. Food safety is also taught.

Homework Haven - (South Burnaby Neighbourhood House)
Children receive help with homework, literacy, math, and study skills after school at Edmonds, Maywood, and Stride Community Schools. Nutritious snacks are provided to support a positive learning environment.

Kids in the Kitchen - (Maywood Community School)Interactive nutrition program for children from Grades One to Seven. Children learn about healthy eating and how to cook nutritious meals and snacks. Children interact with a positive, adult role model.

Gilmore Breakfast Club (Gilmore Community School)
Students assist with preparation of breakfast, learning life skills and nutrition basics. They are offered breakfast twice a week and on an as-needed basis.

Good Food Bag Program - Pregnancy Outreach Program Cooking Workshop - (Burnaby Family Life)
Providing monthly cooking workshops to high-risk prenatal and postnatal women living in Burnaby. Each workshop includes a recipe demonstration using local and seasonal food, a nutritious lunch based on the recipe, pre-measured ingredient bags with a recipe for clients to recreate the meal for their families, and a nutritional pamphlet highlighting a local seasonal food or a nutrition concept.

Norburn Food Bank Coffee Time
This program assists in building community through positive social interactions for those attending the Burnaby Food Bank. A warm drink and nourishing drink is provided.

North Burnaby Community Kitchen - (Gilmore Community School/Heights Neighbourhood Association)
An opportunity for 8 people, with limited income, to meet once a week for 3-10 week sessions per school year, to prepare healthy meals and learn about nutritious and economical meal planning.

Homework and Breakfast Club - (Second Street Community School/Eastside Opportunities Society)A daily morning program providing breakfast and homework assistance to students Grades K-7 to help students with a positive start to the day. Recess snacks are also prepared and/or given out to hungry students. Additional skills emphasized include healthy meal planning and safe food preparation and cleanup.
